New job at Wolfram Research
May 2nd, 2008 by erb
I recently switched jobs, leaving Isilon Systems (in Seattle) to start working at Wolfram Research Inc (in Champaign, IL). Besides a new company, in a new town, it’s also a new position: I’m leaving behind the world of hardware testing, for software testing, as a Quality Assurance Engineer. At least, until Wolfram starts building hardware!
My start date is May 19, and since I’m writing this from the future (May 25), I can say with some certainty it will go pretty well in the first week. It’s still not entirely crystal clear exactly what I will be working on, but I’m focusing on getting more comfortable with Mathematica in general, and certain products in specificity. Namely, I’ve only ever been an amateur Mathematica user — clearly a minority position, considering the license cost. Also, I’ve only ever used (recently) versions 5.x (up through 5.2), and the newer 6.x versions are significantly different — with many new features I’ve never touched. Not to mention other products I’ve never had the opportunity to work with, predating 6.0. Some of what I’m learning now:
- Version 6.x: New commands and features, New front end, New help system and documentation
- Built In Debugger
- gridMathematica
- MathLink and Remote Services
- Parallel Computing Toolkit
- lots more, I’m sure!
