From a recent Wikipedia summary:

State Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican who has often feuded with Palin, remarked, “She’s not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? Look at what she’s done to this state. What would she do to the nation?”

Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post wrote: “The Palin selection completely undercuts the argument about Obama’s inexperience and readiness to lead…. To gratuitously undercut the remarkably successful ‘Is he ready to lead’ line of attack seems near suicidal.”

David Frum of the National Review wrote: “The longer I think about it, the less well this selection sits with me…. If it were your decision, and you were putting your country first, would you put an untested small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?”

In Alaska, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner published an unsigned editorial that opined Palin “is not ready for the top job.”

And something I STILL haven’t heard any discussion of on any national news (well, CNN anyway): (See Alaska Public Safety Commissioner dismissal)

On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, saying that he had not adequately filled state trooper vacancies, and that he “did not turn out to be a team player on budgeting issues.” She instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he turned down.

Her power to fire him is not in dispute, but Monegan alleged that his dismissal was a retaliation for his reluctance to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law, Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin’s sister, Molly McCann. On July 28, 2008, a bipartisan committee of the Alaska Legislature voted 12-0 to hire an independent investigator to investigate Palin and her staff for possible abuse of power surrounding the dismissal.

And let’s not forget who we’re dealing with, in light of potential Supreme Court vacancies…

In 2002, while running for lieutenant governor, Palin called herself as “pro-life as any candidate can be.” She opposes abortion for rape and incest victims, supporting it only in cases where the mother’s life is in danger.

Palin opposes same-sex marriage and supported a non-binding referendum for a constitutional amendment to deny benefits to same-sex couples.

Palin has stated that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

In a televised debate, Palin supported allowing both creationism and evolution in public schools.

She does not support re-legalizing of marijuana in Alaska despite using the drug herself at a time when it was legal under Alaska (but not Federal) law, stating concerns about the message re-legalization would send to her children.

Palin has strongly promoted oil and natural gas resource development in Alaska, including opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to drilling.

She does not believe that global warming is man-made.

She opposed listing of the polar bear as an endangered species, and supported a controversial predator-control program involving aerial hunting of wolves.

Palin is a life member of the National Rifle Association, and is popular among gun rights activists.

And how the fuck can can all these Republican pundits keep saying, over and over and over again, with a straight face, that Palin has more experience than Obama??? A soccer mom who’s pre-gubernatorial experience (pop. Alaska 670 thousand) was mayor of a town of 6,000, compared to a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, who has dealt with the problems of Chicago (pop. 9 million) and Illinois (pop. 12.8 million)? Palin’s educational background? Second place Miss Alaska, B.S. in communications-journalism, minor in political science. Brief career in broadcasting as a sports reporter.

I just heard Rep John Boehner on CNN RIGHT NOW say that Palin has more executive experience than Obama and Biden put together, complaining about the liberal democrat media’s “appalling” behavior towards this “very accomplished woman.”

Do we really want this person a heart attack away from the most influential position in the world?

Disclaimer: I am not a Democrat.

So after two days of work this weekend during idle time in front of the tv, I have an officially live Beta version of the new web site I put together for my high school reunion coming up next year.

http://rths1989.com/blogs/

Comments? Suggestions? Criticisms? I’ll take any and everything!

Things I have planned:

Install RoundCube into http://rths1989.com/email as a webmail reader

A couple “HOWTO” pages (or FAQ links?), complete with some mini screen shots, explaining briefly how to use a blogging (WordPress) system, how to use the webmail system, and (:gulp:) how to use the wiki … although I doubt that the wiki will really get used, at all! :-) (it was only a 5 min install of MediaWiki)

Maybe a “HOWTO” page for JAlbum? Although JAlbum web site has pretty good HOWTOs of its own.

MySQL database for everyone, complete with php pages for reading and updating — keeping it simple. Only registered blog users will have access, for privacy concerns. (I figured I’d piggyback on WordPress, to keep the username/password/account confusion to a minimum, particularly for users! But I’ll use a separate MySQL DB to avoid accidental blog corruption)

More pictures? Albums?

Continue investigating the WP Super-Cache plugin to see if it’s working well

WordPress MU was a semi interesting experience. Much easier than I was fearing. WordPress is really growing up into a full fledged accomplished polished app!

Malaika is making her own trip from Seattle to Champaign… Including all the anipals, plus our friend Julie, who is helping a ton with this move — Thanks Julie! Since she has all the animals, she wanted to take a little longer than I did … four plus one days (I took three, but with 13–14 hour days driving). Here’s her trip, complete with live mini updates and pictures from the road.

See earlier post, wherein I briefly describe my own journey, and also the other earlier post, wherein I include Google maps of said journey.

To recap:

I figured I could do it in either three or four days: Total trip: 2,165 miles — about 31 hours, (4 days) * (8 hours/day) = 32 hours… I ended up doing three days, with actual time probably about 13–14 hours per day.

Also, numbers from the Google maps estimates (note these are appreciably shorter times than what I Actually Encountered):

Mon 05/12/08: 1st Day: Ended in Bozeman MT.
Google says: 679 mi – about 9 hours 43 mins
(not including the ferry ride from Bainbridge Island)

Tue 05/13/08: 2nd Day: Ended in Sioux Falls SD.
Google says: 857 mi – about 11 hours 40 mins

Wed 05/14/08: 3rd Day: Ended in Champaign IL.
Google says: 636 mi – about 9 hours 38 min

I believe 13–14 hour days above are an accurate estimate. So “worst case,” that’s a total of 42 hours. Compare with Google’s estimate above of 31 hours. (If you GoogleMap it straight to Champaign, they say: 2,164 mi – about 1 day 7 hours, which is in agreement.) I don’t think so! So it may be best to consider anything Google says with a grain of salt, and generally add 20%.

Let’s follow the same trip I took, see maps and summaries above.
Briefly: Without mentioning (too many) cities:

From Seattle, Take I-90 for a Long Time: Through Washington, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, until you reach Sioux Falls SD.

When you reach Sioux Falls SD, you will get on southbound I-29.

Continue on I-29 through SD, into Iowa, until you reach the Omaha Nebraska area.

North of Omaha, watch out, you want to get on I-680 (I-80) East.

Continue on I-80 through Iowa, into Illinois…

As soon as you enter Illinois, take I-74 southbound.

I-74 will bring you to Champaign.

Zeroth Day: Wednesday July 9th: Bainbridge Island to Seattle

From Malaika:

Julie and myself would have nothing to sleep on after the movers load all the stuff (I’m hoping they can at least leave us the futon to sleep on together after packing the first day so we have that for Tuesday night).

You are more introverted than extroverted. You are more intuitive than observant, you are more thinking based than feeling based, and you prefer to have a plan rather than leaving things to chance. Your type is best described by the word “mastermind”, which belongs to the larger group called rationals. Only 1% of the population shares your type. You are very strong willed and self-confident. You can hardly rest until you have things settled. You will only adopt ideas and rules if they make sense. You are a great brainstormer and often come up with creative solutions to difficult problems. You are open to new concepts, and often actively seek them out.

As a romantic partner, you can be both fascinating yet demanding. You are not apt to express your emotions, leaving your partner wondering where they are with you. You strongly dislike repeating yourself or listening to the disorganized process of sorting through emotional conflicts. You see your own commitments as self-evident and don’t see why you need to repeat something already expressed. You have the most difficulty in admitting your vulnerabilities. You feel the most appreciated when your partner admires the quality of your innovations and when they listen respectfully to your ideas and advice. You need plenty of quiet to explore your interests to the depth that gives you satisfaction.
