New website / blog for my high school reunion
August 12th, 2008 by erb
So after two days of work this weekend during idle time in front of the tv, I have an officially live Beta version of the new web site I put together for my high school reunion coming up next year.
Comments? Suggestions? Criticisms? I’ll take any and everything!
Things I have planned:
- Install RoundCube into http://rths1989.com/email as a webmail reader
- A couple “HOWTO” pages (or FAQ links?), complete with some mini screen shots, explaining briefly how to use a blogging (WordPress) system, how to use the webmail system, and (:gulp:) how to use the wiki … although I doubt that the wiki will really get used, at all! :-) (it was only a 5 min install of MediaWiki)
- Maybe a “HOWTO” page for JAlbum? Although JAlbum web site has pretty good HOWTOs of its own.
- MySQL database for everyone, complete with php pages for reading and updating — keeping it simple. Only registered blog users will have access, for privacy concerns. (I figured I’d piggyback on WordPress, to keep the username/password/account confusion to a minimum, particularly for users! But I’ll use a separate MySQL DB to avoid accidental blog corruption)
- More pictures? Albums?
- Continue investigating the WP Super-Cache plugin to see if it’s working well
WordPress MU was a semi interesting experience. Much easier than I was fearing. WordPress is really growing up into a full fledged accomplished polished app! ![]()
Driving Cross Country Take Two
July 10th, 2008 by erb
Malaika is making her own trip from Seattle to Champaign… Including all the anipals, plus our friend Julie, who is helping a ton with this move — Thanks Julie! Since she has all the animals, she wanted to take a little longer than I did … four plus one days (I took three, but with 13–14 hour days driving). Here’s her trip, complete with live mini updates and pictures from the road.
See earlier post, wherein I briefly describe my own journey, and also the other earlier post, wherein I include Google maps of said journey.

From lookingforlily’s lj post:
- Reply to this post and I’ll assign you a letter.
- List (and upload, if you feel like it) seven songs that start with that letter.
- Post them to your journal with these instructions.
whereupon I was bestowed with F, a fine letter. In no particular order,
- First And Last And Always, Sisters Of Mercy
- Fuck And Run, Liz Phair
- Fucking Hostile, Pantera
- F…kin With My Head (Mountain Dew Rock), Beck
- Five To One, The Doors
- Falling To Pieces, Faith No More
- Final Countdown, Europe
By the way: Liz Phair is reissuing Exile in Guyville, her debut, on June 24th, for the 15th anniversary (!!). Yowza fuckin’ yowza. Very exciting. From wikipedia:
- It was the number one album in the year-end critics poll in Spin Magazine and the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll.
- It was ranked 15 in Spin’s “100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005″.
- VH1 Named “Exile In Guyville” the 96th Greatest Album Of All-Time.
- In 2003, the album was ranked number 328 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The LONG Scientific Personality Test
INTJ - The Mastermind
(27% I to E, 26% N to S, 57% F to T, 32% J to P)
You are more introverted than extroverted. You are more intuitive than observant, you are more thinking based than feeling based, and you prefer to have a plan rather than leaving things to chance. Your type is best described by the word “mastermind”, which belongs to the larger group called rationals. Only 1% of the population shares your type. You are very strong willed and self-confident. You can hardly rest until you have things settled. You will only adopt ideas and rules if they make sense. You are a great brainstormer and often come up with creative solutions to difficult problems. You are open to new concepts, and often actively seek them out.
As a romantic partner, you can be both fascinating yet demanding. You are not apt to express your emotions, leaving your partner wondering where they are with you. You strongly dislike repeating yourself or listening to the disorganized process of sorting through emotional conflicts. You see your own commitments as self-evident and don’t see why you need to repeat something already expressed. You have the most difficulty in admitting your vulnerabilities. You feel the most appreciated when your partner admires the quality of your innovations and when they listen respectfully to your ideas and advice. You need plenty of quiet to explore your interests to the depth that gives you satisfaction.

The Loverboy
Random Gentle Love Master (RGLM)
Well-liked. Well-established. You are The Loverboy. Loverboys thrive in committed, steady relationships—as opposed to, say, Playboys, who want sex without too much attachment.
You’ve had many relationships and nearly all of them have been successful. You’re a nice guy, you know the ropes, and even if you can be a little hasty with decisions, most girls think of you as a total catch. Your hastiness comes off as spontaneity most of the time anyhow, making you especially popular in your circle of friends, too.
You know not to make the typical Loverboy mistake of choosing someone who appreciates your good humor and popularity, but who offers nothing in return. You belong with someone outgoing, independent, and creative. Otherwise, you’ll get bored. And then instead of surprising her with flowers or a practical joke, you’ll surprise her by leaving.
